Knives tossed loose in a drawer dull each other, and nobody enjoys reaching blindly past them. This tray gives ten of them their own slots: four large up to 8 inches, five in the 4 to 5 inch range, and one more for a sharpening stone. The clear lid closes over the lot. Knives are not included, so measure yours and the drawer before you commit to it.

Anatomy of the tool

Storage

Ten channels, one of them for the stone

Every knife sits in its own slot, so edges never meet each other or the bottom of the drawer. The stone channel is the detail that earns its keep, since a loose whetstone rolling around a drawer is what usually chips a blade.

Lid

Clear lid over the whole row

The cover goes on over the insert to keep dust off stored blades, and it is clear, so you can see which knife you are about to reach for. Leave it off if the drawer is in constant rotation.

Pairing

Knife case now, silverware later

The knife insert lifts out, which turns the same unit into an open tray for forks, spoons or utensils. One part moved, two configurations; if the knives migrate to a block later, the tray still earns its drawer.

Care

Drainage holes under wet steel

Holes in the base let moisture out instead of trapping it against stored blades, and the insert rinses under the tap. Dry the knives before they go back in anyway, because plastic will not pull water off steel.

From the sharpening bench

Measure the longest knife you own before ordering. This tray is not cut for cleavers or extra-wide butcher blades, and forcing one into a slot bends the dividers.
